AAS Client Andrea Ho Talks About her Experiences in her 5 year Collegiate Career

Over the past five seasons, Andrea Ho has been a key figure in the continued growth of GW women's swimming and diving.

The swimmer from Perth, Australia, was an All-Conference First Team performer in 2020 when the program won its first-ever Atlantic 10 title, and back in February, she scored in a pair of individual events to help the Buff and Blue return to the top of the conference standings. She closes out a terrific career ranked in the program's all-time top five in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly.

Here, Ho, who earned a double in International Affairs and Economics and is pursuing a master's in Business Analytics, looks back in the latest edition of Buff & Blue Forever.

Like most kids who grow up in Australia, I’ve been swimming practically my whole life. Mummy and me classes turned into learn-to-swim classes which quickly transitioned into club swimming before I even realized I loved the sport.

Growing up with sisters who also swam made the decision easy, but who knew that those formative moments would turn into an extraordinary journey that would transcend anything I ever imagined.

Closing out a 17-year career, it’s incredible thinking back on a journey that has exceeded even my wildest dreams, capped off with five amazing years of college.

It’s hard to put into words what it has meant to represent the Buff and Blue and how much of a profound impact being at GW has had on me. Being recruited to swim at GW so far from home was daunting, but also the easiest decision I ever made.

I feel like I have lived a thousand lives on the way to growing into this version of myself. Even my nickname changed. Going from high school swimmer "Ange" into college swimmer "Andy" was an opportunity to figure out who I was away from home.

To my teammates, coaches, support staff and friends along the way who have shaped me into who I am today, thank you.

It takes a village, and I am endlessly grateful for mine that spans every corner of the globe. You've truly made these the best five years of my life. Each year, I have grown more into who I want to be, and I owe it all to you.

Making history with this team has been incredible. Winning the first team championship on the women’s side in 2020 was far beyond what I imagined coming into this program in 2017. Taking it further, sweeping the team titles for the first time in program history this year was the icing on the cake to a stellar five-year career.

Hearing our names called after the meet, running through the teammate arch to collect our trophies and jumping into the pool together as a combined program is a memory I will never forget. The chaos of treading water to shout the fight song after reaching the huge team goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season is truly a wonderful feeling.

I am proud of all that we've accomplished, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. I know this awesome program will only keep growing from here.

As my career ends, it is not the times or the swims that I’ll remember the most. It’s the people, the support, the hugs after each race and knowing I’ve been a part of something so much bigger than just myself.

I may not have always been the highest scorer, fastest swimmer or loudest voice on the pool deck, but I hope that in my time I have been a constant shoulder to lean on, someone to look up to as others have been for me.

After four undergraduate years and a bonus graduate year to cap it all off, I am endlessly appreciative to GW for the countless opportunities and all the support. I am forever a better person because of all the love, and I promise to continue to Raise High.

Buff and Blue Forever,
Andrea Ho

Returned athlete Ella Kleinschmidt talks to AAS about her College experience. Ella provides some great insights and what it's like to study and compete in the United States.

Q. What made you decide to compete and study at a US college?

A. I decided to compete and study at a US college because I wanted three things after I graduated year 12... I wanted to continue my studies and get a degree, keep swimming and travel. This gave me the opportunity to do all three at once.

Q. How did you commence the process and how long did it take?

A. I commenced the process after seeing an advertisement in one of my swim meet programs. I contacted the website and it started from there! The whole process took just under a year I believe. I cannot remember the exact dates. I stated some time at the beginning of year 12 and finished when I signed to Brenau University in February the following year.

Q. How did it compare to competing in your sport in Australia?

A. I loved growing up in swimming Australia, I have so many great memories. However I feel as though the US (especially the NAIA system I was in) was incredibly cohesive with so much comradery between teams. I was not competing for myself but a team.

Q. What qualities do you feel a student athlete needs to possess to be successful at a US university?

A. I think time management is a HUGE one. I graduated as a successful national finalist level athlete and at the top of my graduating class with a 4.0 GPA. I can only commend this success to being able to time manage between schooling, training and also giving myself time to enjoy experiencing life in a different country. Determination, perseverance, and the ability to accept help when you need it.

Q. How did you balance your athletic and academic interests during your scholarship?

A. I balanced these two things by, calendars, writing all things down that I had to do and communicating closely with my teachers to work with me.

Q. What are the key challenges you encountered during your scholarship?

A. I feel as though the key challenged I encountered were battling homesickness for both Aus and the US when I was in either place, but I feel as though the biggest key challenge was the abrupt shock of how much more work (mentally, physically and emotionally) being a college athlete was. There’s a reason why it’s commended.

Q. What were some of your most memorable moments during your experience?

A. For me to pick just some of my most memorable moments is impossible. For me, it’s the entire experience. The entire experience from the friendships I made, the academic successes I had, the training sessions, the successes in the pool by myself or with my team, experiencing ‘life as an american’ to doing things I never would have had a chance to do. Leaving after 4 years was so difficult.

Q. Would you recommend other students consider a US scholarship experience?

A. Yes yes yes and YES! It is the most incredible experience I’ve ever had and I would go back to do it again and again if I could! I would reccommend it to everyone!

Q. How did you benefit from studying and competing in the US college system?

A. I benefited by being able to continue to succeed in the pool, achieving placings in times I wouldn’t have if I had stayed in Aus after year 12, as I would have stopped swimming. Academically I never would have gotten the individual attention and copious amounts of help. The academic system in the US and everyone at college is so driven to do so well and achieve the best grades they can, which most definitely pushed me to do the same. I would not have not as well academically if I had not been in this environment.

Returned athlete Desmond Cairns talks to AAS about his College experience. Des provides some great insights and what it's like to study and compete in the United States.

Q. What made you decide to compete and study at a US college?

A. "I decided to compete and study in the US because I wanted to continue swimming in an environment that was supportive and understood my educational goals. My decision also gave me the experience of living and studying in another country"

Q. How did you commence the process and how long did it take?

A. "A friend referred me to AAS toward the end of Year 11. Once we had gathered all the necessary documents and I had taken the SAT, AAS began contacting coaches on my behalf. By the second semester of Year 12, I was talking directly with coaches and by the end of that year I had decided on my university"

Q. How did it compare to competing in your sport in Australia?

A. "The camaraderie between my American teammates was much stronger than anything I had experienced in Australia. This was because the success of the program was measured predominantly by the team’s score at the conference meet, and to a lesser extent, the results of dual meets. I also found that I was encouraged to practice more events because each swimmer has to compete in three events at each meet"

Q. What qualities do you feel a student athlete needs to possess to be successful at a US university?

A. "My American university provided considerable support for their student-athletes and as such I think it is important for students to be willing to seek out these services when appropriate. I also think that in order to make their study-abroad as enjoyable as possible, foreign student-athletes should be open to experiencing as many aspects of American culture as possible"

Q. How did you balance your athletic and academic interests during your scholarship?

A. "Developing consistent study habits and remaining organised were important in ensuring that I kept up with my coursework. However my coaches were always very understanding when it came to schoolwork and this prevented me from having too many conflicts or getting overwhelmed"

Q. What are the key challenges you encountered during your scholarship?

A. "The only challenge I’ve faced in America is bringing myself to leave at the end of my degree. I’ve had such a positive experience in the US that I’ve decided to stay after graduation"

Q. What were some of your most memorable moments during your experience?

A. "Every January we would have a training camp in warmer locations to escape the snow and boost team moral. On these trips to Florida, Peurto Rico and Colorado, the intense workouts and other activities we did as a team helped me to form strong bonds with my teammates"

Q. Would you recommend other students consider a US scholarship experience?

A. "I would recommend it to anyone that’s interested. I think that there enough universities in the US that everyone can find one that suits them"

Q. How did you benefit from studying and competing in the US college system?

A. "The US college system gave me the opportunity to extend my swimming career for another four years, without compromising my scholastic pursuits. It allowed me to continue practicing swimming at a level that fulfilled my competitiveness and in doing so, helped me to unlock more of potential. Outside of the pool, moving to the other side of the world taught me to be accountable and responsible. Lastly, through this experience, I met many great people that wouldn’t have crossed my path, otherwise"

Q. How did you balance your athletic and academic interests during your scholarship?

A. “I focused more on academics, as this was my priority. I think it is about figuring out what you want out of athletics and academics and just going from there”

Q. What are the key challenges you encountered during your scholarship?

A. “I ended up finding that I wanted to do other things, and so this made things tricky. Culturally, there is a difference that you have to adapt to as well. I loved my time in the US and wouldn’t change a thing”

Q. How did you benefit from studying and competing in the US college system?

We contacted Nick Terzis from American Athletic Scholarships in July 2015 regarding the possibility of our daughter Grace obtaining a swimming scholarship in the USA.

After our initial consultation we were confident that Nick was the perfect person to guide us through this timely and intricate process. Having gone through this journey before as a parent, Nick has gained a comprehensive understanding of both how the NAIA and NCAA processes work.

We found Nick Terzis to be extermely helpful, punctual, diligent and his honesty and integrity are beyond reproach. Nick truly was with us "every step of the way".

Although we live on the Gold Coast and AAS is based in Sydney we found it was no obstacle in communicating with Nick as we were always updated with emails, texts phone calls and Skype. Even on one occasion when our family flew down to Sydney for a long weekend, Nick went out of his way to meet with us to discuss our scholarship progress! He was not only in getting to know Grace as an athlete but also us as a family.

Nick has gone above and beyond our expectations in every way and with his help and guidance was awarded a swimming and academic scholarship with a University in Kentucky.

We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Nick and AAS to anyone wishing to pursue a sporting scholarship in the USA.

Thank you gain Nick, you have truly been an invaluable part of our experience and we cannot thank you enough for your involvement throughout this whole process.

Gerry Moffat - May 2016

My 4-years living in the USA comes to a close; I am so very thankful to have had this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Throughout my time, I was able to experience being a honours student, a student-athlete, an international student and an intern; I have made many life-long friendships and have had the opportunity to travel. Mum, Dad & Claudia have been such a huge support! Super excited to move back to Australia and start a new job; closing one chapter, beginning another.

The NCAA has approved new rules allowing soccer review videos commencing in the 2016 season. If both coaches agree to allow video review before the start of the game, the home team will be responsible for providing the review equipment, and it must be available at the scorekeeper’s table or at another location at field level.

Determine whether a goal has been scored.
	Identify players for disciplinary matters.
Determine whether a fight occurred and identify all participants.
